Fawn Potash

(English below)

Fawn Potash is a studio artist based in Guanajuato, Mexico whose work has been shown in New York City, across the eastern US states and in her hometown, St. Louis, Missouri. Her work is in collections worldwide including the Sony, Dow Jones, Standard and Poors Asia, Bibiliotech National in Paris and Sheraton Hotels, Montreal. Potash’s work has received grant support from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Puffin Foundation, the Bell Atlantic Foundation, Fuji and Ilford Inc. Her many educational and administrative roles have offered opportunities to integrate left and right brain talents, bringing art and work life together including a 20 year tenure at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, leading a criticism seminar for photography majors. She shaped the workshops at the Center for Photography at Woodstock over a fifteen year period and jump started the fledgling galleries at the Catskill Mountain Foundation. Her five years as the Visual Arts Director at the Greene County Council on the Arts focused on curatorial partnerships between the arts, area culture and community groups. As Director of Masters on Main Street, she created pop-up exhibitions, film festivals, workshops and performance events as a national showcase for MFA students, recent alumni, local and national artists of note. This project helped to rev up Catskill Main Street’s economic engines, enliven the downtown and connect residents and visitors across community sectors.

Her current studio work explores the shapes and shadows of plastic consumer packaging in a still life series using one of photography’s oldest print media- cyanotypes first invented in 1842. This non-toxic process uses a hand-painted emulsion with light sensitive iron salts, applied to absorbent cotton paper, exposed to UV light and processed in plain water. Objects laid directly on the print surface are called photograms (photo/light + gram/drawing), without using a camera or lens. Exposures in the sun, at noon create recognizable blue and white silhouettes of these everyday objects. Exposures at 3pm or 6pm create a distorted version of the plastic forms because of the sun’s angle. Also on display are cyanotype photographs, using a camera, digital negative and the same sun exposure with water processing. I am interested in the transformation of these cultural artifacts into something organic looking; designed by humans and made by machines, these images might be macro or microscopic entities, internal organs or maybe something cosmic. The plastic forms hanging alongside the prints are examples of the plastic packaging used in this work.
